These custom-engineered solutions provide 24/7 flood defence for fan plants, vents, ducts, and window openings, whether above or below ground, with minimal disruption to airflow.
The system consists of one or more buoyant flood panels housed within a durable aluminium frame. In their resting state, the panels allow for normal airflow. When floodwater rises, the panels directly affected by the water become buoyant and lift into a deployed position, creating a sealed barrier. Integrated wiper seals prevent water from bypassing the deployed panels, while unaffected sections of the system remain open. The structure is designed to drain automatically after a flood event, requiring no additional drainage to clear.
Engineered for a long service life with minimal maintenance, these devices have been field-tested in harsh, real-world conditions. Each unit is custom-sized to meet specific loading and airflow requirements and can be designed for inboard duct work, vent shafts, or face-mounting on buildings.
In 2008, New York City Transit sought a solution to protect its vertical subway street vents from flash floods. FloodBreak® designed a passive automatic vent shaft system (FB-VVS) to meet this challenge. The first units were installed in Brooklyn and Queens in 2010. A decade later, they were tested and confirmed to operate exactly as designed.
The system’s simple design allows each unit to be dropped into position within the vent shaft, hung by gravity on an embedded angle frame beneath the grating, with no anchoring required. These mechanical closure devices (MCDs) continue to be installed in flood-prone areas across the city, particularly in locations that are difficult to access quickly.
